MAP Testing (Measures of Academic Progress):   All students will be participating in MAP testing for math and reading during the months of January and February.  The purpose will be to determine student growth and whether students are performing at grade level, according to the assessment standards.  Students determined to be meeting grade level expectations should be at or above the 50th percentile on the assessment report.  Parent reports will be sent home again at the conclusion of the assessment window.  If you have any questions, please feel free to reply to this email or to email Mrs. Kahan at ckahan@bcps.org

Black History Month:   Students will once again be celebrating Black History Month through participation in a Black History Living Museum (grades 4 and 5) and engaging in a school assembly that will be scheduled for students toward the end of February.  We look forward to this school wide celebration!

Virtues:  Team Gunpowder is continuing to learn about and recognize in each other Virtues (inner qualities) each month.  The virtue this month has been Self-Discipline.

Self-discipline is defined as “To make yourself do things that should be done.  To speak and act calmly when you are hurt or angry.  Create and practice routines that bring peace and order to your day.  Practice self-moderation.  Do things on time.”  We teach and reinforce the virtue by using the virtue in a sentence, along with the specific behavior or choice that demonstrated the virtue.  For example, “Wow!  You really showed self-discipline when you kept working to finish your homework, even though your favorite television show had begun.”
